Tips to Prevent Your Toilet From Blocking

Many issues can happen to your toilet but perhaps the most common of all is a blockage. In most cases, the problem can be easily taken care without the need for professional plumbing services. Unblocking the toilet isn’t complicated but it can be a mess. If you want to lessen the instances of a blocked toilet or just want to prevent it then you should definitely follow the tips below!

  1. Always be careful of what you flush

Many homeowners often have a habit of turning their toilet into a garbage can. Different objects are flushed down the toilet which actually contributes to blockage in the pipeline. Hair, floss, wipes, tampons, plastic, and other items shouldn’t be drained into the toilet. There’s always a common misconception that it’s okay to drain an object as long as it’s “flushable”. The thing is that particular objects can be flushed but it doesn’t mean it won’t block the pipe. Items like plastics and wipes don’t decompose so these will just sit on the pipeline and cause a blockage.

The general rule when it comes to flushing is to limit the items you flush between human wastes and toilet paper. It’s okay to flush toilet paper since it can decompose and doesn’t block the drainpipe. However, you shouldn’t flush copious amounts of toilet paper since this will make it difficult for the toilet pipes to drain the items. A large lump of toilet paper will also take a long time to disintegrate.

  1. Double-flush if necessary

There may be an instance in which human wastes is too much for your toilet to handle. In this case, you need to do a double flush. Doing so will cause the waste to be further pushed into the pipes. If you notice the water is rising or overflowing then don’t flush the toilet. Flushing will only cause the water to rise and cause an even bigger overflow. Try using a plunger to remove the blockage and if it still doesn’t work; then call plumbing services as soon as you can.

  1. Have your sewer lines checked

Sometimes the blocked toilet isn’t caused by the toilet’s drain pipes but the sewer line itself. If you notice that the toilet blockage is recurring despite unblocking and doing proper maintenance, then it’s most likely that the problem is within the sewer line. A blocked sewer line can greatly affect the toilet because of its direct connection.

There are many causes of a blocked sewer line. These causes include: collapsed sewer pipeline, tree root invasions, blockages from flushed objects, grease and oil accumulation, etc. As you may have noticed, there are many factors that can lead to a blocked sewer line. It’s impossible to pinpoint the exact cause without knowing the condition of the sewer pipes which is why a sewer line inspection is highly recommended. A thorough sewer pipe examination will highlight the underlying problem of the sewer line. After the examination, the plumbing professional will be able to provide input on what to do in order to remove the blockage. Make sure you follow the advice and get your sewer pipes cleared as soon as possible.
